The new latrines
These are, quite simply, AMAZING.
There used to be just one long-drop in Mary’s compound. This was fine when it was just her, her family and a few children boarding; but as the school grew, and the number of boarders grew, it was obvious that having just one loo was going to be a problem.
The new latrine block began with the digging of a 60 foot hole, which would eventually accommodate all the new long-drops.
- The hole disappears into the darkness
- The long-drop is dug by hand
- Lifting the spoil from the hole
- At the bottom of the excavation
- Working at the bottom of the hole
- The start of the foundations
- Gradually the new block appears
- Building up the walls begins
We watched as photos came in, showing the hole being dug, the foundations laid, and the walls being built. But nothing prepared us for seeing the finished block sitting serenely just outside the compound.

- It was hard to believe the end result
- There are separate areas for boys and girls
