The extraordinary biogas system – powered entirely by Mulungi
Mulungi – “Beautiful” – the cow was given to Mary Kabiito in 2009 by Send A Cow. This wonderful cow provides full cream milk which is used to provide porridge for every student on every school day. Often this is the only meal of the day for some of the children, and the milk Mulungi gives is full of nutritional goodness.
- Porridge is a very important meal
- Often it’s the only meal of the day
- The mugs are brimming with milk and porridge
- Porridge is always a happy time
Her wee has always been used as an insecticide, to keep off the Banana Fly, and her poo has been used for manure. The biogas system goes a hundred steps further, by using her poo to produce gas for cooking and lighting.
- Mulungi is at the heart of everything
- Her poo is collected in a buried container
- The pits are scattered among the bananas
- The pipe allows excess gas to escape
The gas produced is piped into Mary’s house, and enables both a cooking ring for boiling water, and a light.
